Monitoring the Safe Introduction of Novel foods (MoSIN)

A key element of improving food supply sustainability, for which there is pressing need, is moving to more plant-based and alternative protein sources. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the potential safety implications of such a dietary shift and ensure that approaches and tools are in place for risk assessment and management. Allergic consumers already avoid various foods when uncertain about their safety, which can lead to unbalanced diets, higher costs, social impairments and health problems, and no acceptance of novel foods.

There are ongoing challenges associated with the risk assessment and management of food allergies, including:

  • lack of knowledge about how food allergies develop or increase in prevalence;
  • absence of a monitoring system for emerging allergies;
  • aspects of food allergy labelling that require addressing (e.g., precautionary allergen labelling, incorrect    artwork) to improve allergic consumer safety.

MoSIN will focus on the integrity of the food system. Through a collaboration between different stakeholders from healthcare, social sciences, patients’ organization, food producers, retailers, and regulators, we aim to improve understanding of how food allergy develops in a changing food environment (effect of diet, exposure, ancestry and sex), culminating in the development and implementation of a monitoring system for emerging allergies to improve and harmonize allergy risk management, as well as communication of understandable allergy information. This may result in increased acceptance of novel foods, increased sustainability of our food supply, awareness of the risks of allergic reactions to (novel) foods, prevention of food allergy and undernutrition, and subsequently reduced (healthcare) costs.
