Project overview

Work Package 1 - Food Allergy Development uitklapper, klik om te openen

Work Package 1  is aimed towards studying characteristics as well as environmental and habitary factors in relation to food allergy development. Focussing on the following research questions:

  • Can novel foods introduce new allergies?
  • How long after introduction of a novel food can de novo sensitization and subsequent food allergic reactions be expected?
  • How is the development of new allergies affected by dietary habits, ancestry, and exposure?
  • Can introduction of novel plant-based food with high homologies to well-known allergens from peanut and soy induce clinically relevant food allergies?

Work Package 2 - Monitoring and Communication uitklapper, klik om te openen

Work Package 2 aims towards developing a monitoring system and optimizing allergen communication in the food industry. The following research questions will be studied.

  • How to develop, test and implement a reporting system to monitor adverse reactions to food (PMM system)?
  • Can we collect adverse reactions to (novel) foods not reported to industry and physicians or health authorities but reported in social media and scientific literature using AI?
  • What roles can a PMM system and AI play in monitoring food safety concerns related to novel foods?
  • What are perceptions of consumers and allergic patients regarding the introduction of novel foods? Which factors influence the trust and acceptance of Dutch consumers and patients in novel protein-rich foods?
  • Can we improve and harmonize the information on allergen food safety to consumers and between food system actors?
